Each year, the Hub’s national conference on May 3rd, World Press Freedom Day, brings together journalists, media managers, members of international organizations, friends of the media, and activists for the annual conference held in Toronto or Virginia in the U.S.
On February 16, 2021, the Hub proudly introduced the face of Afghanistan’s freedom of expression, a groundbreaking initiative that saw over 1,700 nominations from journalists across various provincial centers of Afghanistan. In a landmark decision by a discerning panel of judges, Anisa Shahid, a distinguished female journalist, was declared the winner and honored as the best Afghan journalist of the year. This historic achievement signifies the first instance where a journalistic organization officially acknowledged a female journalist as the embodiment of freedom of expression.
The Hub’s annual event will introduce the “Journalist of the Year Award” to two Afghan journalists, selected through a rigorous process conducted by a committee consisting of Hub members and independent senior media experts before the event. This initiative aims to honor and spotlight the remarkable contributions of Afghan journalists who have demonstrated exceptional resilience and unwavering commitment to the principles of press freedom.
