Said Najib Asil is the President and CEO of Free Speech Hub, a journalist-centric, non-profit organization dedicated to protecting journalists, their rights, and advocating for freedom of speech. Mr. Asil recently served at CBC News as a JHR fellow from September 2022 to September 2023. With nearly two decades of journalism experience, Mr. Asil’s expertise shines through his leadership role as the head of Current Affairs at TOLOnews, Afghanistan’s largest media network, and pioneering 24/7 news and current affairs TV channel. His freelance work includes collaborations with BBC World News, France 24, NPR, and The Walrus magazine, among others. Mr. Asil has attended several conferences on media and journalism in conflict-affected countries. He was awarded the Freedom Champion for his efforts in promoting human rights, individual freedom, and fostering a free and inclusive society in Afghanistan’s challenging environments. He holds a BSc in Journalism from Kabul University and Public Administration from TDSB, Toronto, Ontario.

Sami Mahdi is the cofounder and Editor-in-Chief of Amu TV, where he is leading Afghanistan’s largest hybrid newsroom of more than thirty journalists inside the country and about two dozen others across the world. Mr. Mahdi is the former Director of PAYK Investigative Journalism Center and a fellow at Harvard University’s Shorenstein Center. He was recently the Bureau Chief of Radio Azadi (Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty) in Afghanistan and before that Strategic Advisor to TOLOnews. He worked as CEO of Khurshid TV from 2013-2014 and as Director of News and Current Affairs at 1TV from 2009-2013. In 2012, Mr. Mahdi was awarded the Knight International Journalism Award by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) for his “excellent and courageous reporting” in 2012. He also used to teach at Kabul University from 2017 to 2021.
Award-winning journalist Najiba Ayubi is an Afghan journalist and activist for human rights and freedom of the press, with over two decades of experience covering news stories in the country. Ms. Ayubi has worked under anonymous threats and attacks from government entities for her reporting on politics and women’s rights. As Managing Director of The Killid Group, she leads a team of reporters working in print, broadcast, and online media, which includes two of the country’s most popular magazines (Killid Weekly and Mursal Weekly) and eleven radio stations with a total of 12 million listeners and about 100 affiliated radios. She has refused calls for censorship and is passionate about independent media.
Ms. Ayubi is the co-founder of the Afghan Independent Media Consortium and the Freedom of Expression Initiative, which aims to provide resources and support for independent journalists in her country. In recognition of her courage and contribution, Ms. Ayubi won the International Women’s Media Foundation Courage in Journalism Award in 2013.
Parwiz Kawa is a Media Specialist, Civil Society Activist and Journalist. He is a founding member and Executive Director of Hasht-Subh Daily. During the years 2021 to 2023 he also served as the News Editor at Afghanistan International TV, a 24/7 news channel in Washington DC. He is also a winner of “Journalist of Courage and Impact” award by East-West-Centre in 2018 and 2022. He has more than 20 years of experience working with different monthly journals, radios, TVs, and newspapers. He is also an advisor to Afghanistan Journalists Centre (AFJC) and a jury member for selection of the Journalist of the Year in Afghanistan. He has graduated from the school of Law and Political Science of Kabul University, and holds a master’s degree in Peace, Security and International Development Studies from the University of Innsbruck, Austria.
Lotfullah Najafizada is an Afghan journalist with Amu TV, an international media outlet for Afghanistan. Previously, he headed TOLOnews TV in Afghanistan for over a decade until 2021. Among recognitions for his work, he won Journalist of the Year Award by One Young World in 2022 and received the Medal of Press Freedom Hero from City of Paris and Reporters without Borders in 2016. He is a former fellow with the Institute of Politics, University of Chicago, and the Atlantic Council.
Zaki Daryabi is Founding Director of Etilaatroz and KabulNow. Zaki has a B.A. in law and political science studies from Kabul University. He is an expert in the field of civic engagement and human rights and has worked with different national institutions, including Afghanistan Civil Society Network. Zaki founded Etilaatroz in 2012, and since then, it has become one of the most well-respected newspapers in Afghanistan, with millions of followers in the country and abroad. Etilaatroz, as an independent entity, reports on women’s and children’s issues; additionally, Etilaatroz is known for its investigative pieces uncovering corruption issues in Afghanistan.
Freshta Farhang is a prominent journalist in Afghan media, best known for her co-founding and executive editor role at Khabarnama Media. With an unwavering dedication to journalism, Farhang has extensively covered critical issues in Afghanistan, including the country’s war, political dynamics, human rights, and particularly, the rights of women. Her work is characterized by a deep commitment to uncovering the truth and providing a voice to the voiceless, earning her respect and recognition in the field of journalism.
Currently living in exile, Freshta Farhang continues her journalistic endeavors with an unyielding focus on the human rights situation in Afghanistan.
Sharif Hassanyar, founding Director of Chashm News, a platform dedicated to protecting freedom of expression, civic values, and human rights. With a journalism degree from the University of Kabul, he began his career at Moby Media Group, (TOLO and TOLOnews TV channels), rising to News Manager for over eight years, Hassanyar played a crucial role in shaping the news narrative, enriching the media landscape with his insights and expertise.
In 2014, he assumed the role of Managing Director at Ariana TV and Ariana News. where his visionary leadership continues to drive journalistic excellence and innovation.
Throughout his career, he has written on various topics and conducted interviews on Afghan and international issues. Hassanyar is recognized for his visionary leadership and commitment to journalistic excellence. He firmly believes in the media’s power to shape society, advocating for integrity and truth-telling in journalism.
Hassanyar’s contributions continue to enrich Afghanistan’s media landscape, fostering dialogue and promoting civic values.
Mr. Mujib Mehrdad, is a poet, playwright, translator, and journalist. He is the author of several poetry collections, including “Gladiators Are Still Dying” (2007), which won the Afghan Civil Society’s literature contest. His other works include “The Fishes Have Fled Our Veins” (2008), “Audience” (2009) and “Soldiers” (2014). His latest poetry collection, “Dolphin’s Alley”, won the Ahmad Shamlu Award for the Best Collection of the Year in Iran in 2021. He has also penned a collection of essays titled, “The Rain Passed”, as well as translated the works of notable writers such as Allen Ginsberg, Sylvia Plath, Langston Hughes, Vladimir Mayakovski, and Rabindranath Tagore into Dari. Mr. Mehrdad served as a board member of the prestigious Kashane Nawesendagan (House of Authors) and the Afghanistan Pen Association, where he represented the organization at the 76th Congress of the International Pen Association in Tokyo in 2010. In 2014, he was selected as one of the participants in the prestigious International Writing Program (IWP) in the United States, joining 31 other poets and writers. Previously, from 2010-2011, Mr. Mehrdad worked at TOLO TV as a script writer; from 2011-2021, taught Persian literature at Albironi University; from 2014-2018, served as the spokesperson for the Ministry of Education of Afghanistan; and, from 2020-2022, held the position of editor-in-chief at Hasht-e-Subh Daily, Afghanistan’s largest newspaper. Mr. Mehrdad holds an MA in English Literature from Punjab University, India (2020) and a BA in Persian Literature from Kabul University (2009). In 2022, he was a visiting scholar at Florida Atlantic University.
Nasir Maimanagy, a dynamic leader, currently serves as the President of Salam Afghanistan Media Organization (SAMO), also known as Salam Watandar. SAMO is not only a distinguished NGO but also a prominent media entity, boasting a vast network of 89 partner radio stations spanning all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. With a dedicated focus on broadcasting news, informative content, educational programs, and entertaining shows, SAMO reaches an extensive audience of over 20 million citizens nationwide.
Assuming the helm of SAMO in April 2012 upon his return to Afghanistan from Canada, Nasir brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his role. His journey began with immigration to Canada in 2000, where he pursued postsecondary studies in Political Science and Business Administration at the University of Toronto and Memorial University of Newfoundland, respectively.
Under Nasir’s visionary guidance, Salam Watandar has undergone remarkable expansion, evolving from a network of 36 radios in 29 provinces to an impressive 102 radios covering all 34 provinces. In the face of adversity following the republic’s fall in 2021, Nasir demonstrated resilience and foresight by registering SAMO in Canada as an exile/hybrid media entity, ensuring the continuation of operations and service provision to the Afghan populace.
Hamid Haidari is a Multimedia Journalist and Editor with over a decade of experience working across various media outlets and television channels. His professional journey includes four years of dedicated service within UN offices in Afghanistan, where he honed his skills in communication and media relations.
In recent years, Haidari has held the esteemed position of Media Manager and Editor-in-Chief at 1TV in Afghanistan, demonstrating his exceptional leadership abilities and editorial expertise. Throughout his career, he has exemplified a deep commitment to journalistic integrity and excellence.
Haidari holds a Journalism Professional degree and possesses a strong background in public relations, further enhancing his capacity to navigate the complex landscape of media and communications.
With a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success, Hamid Haidari continues to make significant contributions to the field of journalism, earning respect and recognition both locally and internationally.
Abidullah Ehsas, born in 1983, is a seasoned journalist with professional qualifications from Kabul University’s Faculty of Journalism, graduating in 2007. Throughout his career spanning over 18 years, he has held various prominent roles within both national and international media outlets.
Ehsas has contributed significantly to the field of journalism in Afghanistan, serving as a Reporter for Afghanistan National Radio and Television, Head of the Pashto section at Nakhost Newspaper, Editor of Khwazakht Weekly Newspaper, and Editor of MELI Bawar Newspaper. He has also been a Reporter for Shamshad Radio TV, a Tax Editor, and News Manager for Shamshad Radio TV, as well as a Reporter for VOA.
Beyond his roles within established media organizations, Ehsas has demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit as the founder and director of Moj Media, further enriching the media landscape in Afghanistan.
With his extensive experience and dedication to journalistic integrity, Abid Ehsas is widely recognized and trusted by the public as a prominent figure in Afghan journalism.
Abdul Mutalib Feragi is a skilled journalist with a master’s degree in journalism from Metropolitan University Oslo and a bachelor’s degree in management and commerce from a private university in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Beginning his career in media with Norin Television in Kabul in 2014, he quickly rose to prominence. From 2019 to 2021, he served as a senior reporter and producer of investigative reports at the PAYK Investigative Journalism Center, showcasing his dedication to uncovering truth and holding power to account.
Concurrently, he worked as an executive officer at Afghanistan’s Free Speech Hub, advocating for media freedom and journalist rights. Following the collapse of the previous government in Afghanistan, he immigrated to the United States and joined Amu TV as a reporter and presenter of political shows where he continues to excel in his field.
Throughout his career, Abdul Mutalib Feragi has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to ethical journalism, transparency, and human rights, embodying the principles of integrity and social justice.
Abdul Farid Ahmad is an Afghan Journalist and has around two decades of experience in media and communication in Afghanistan. He is holding a BA in journalism from Kabul University. He was recently deputy director for TOLOnews Afghanistan TV station. He used to work for Afghanistan Civil Services Commission, Afghanistan Capacity Building Program and was head of Elections desk for TOLOnews, news director for 1TV Afghanistan and news editor for Pajhwok.
Waliullah Rahmani is a distinguished entrepreneur, researcher, and human rights advocate. He currently serves as an Asia Researcher with the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and as a media fellow at Global Friends of Afghanistan. Rahmani was the founder of Khabarnama Media, a pioneering digital media organization in Afghanistan.
Rahmani also held the role of founding director at the Kabul Center for Strategic Studies from 2007 to 2014. His research spans over a decade and focuses on terrorism, insurgency, radical Islamic movements, and the geopolitical dynamics of Afghanistan and the broader South Asian region.
